To gain a better understanding of the impact of climate change on the Uapishka (Groulx) Mountains, the MUBR has been installing various pieces of weather measurement and monitoring equipment to help collect long-term climate data.

Such tools are essential to enhancing knowledge of the impact of climate change on the unique MUBR habitats and making informed decisions regarding the proactive management and conservation of the region’s biodiversity.

  • Installation of a weather station in the transition zone between the closed canopy forest and the alpine environment in the area to measure variations in forest dynamics based on the altitude (a joint project with Natural Resources Canada – Canadian Forest Service – Laurentian Forestry Centre)
  • Installation of a standardized weather station in the local forest, the data from which will be integrated into Québec’s climate monitoring network to increase knowledge of the weather and fine-tune climate forecasting models for this particular sector (with the support of Environment and Climate Change Canada)
  • Installation of two snow cover measurement stations, the first in an alpine environment and the second in a subalpine environment – Data collected will help to monitor the conditions required for compliance with the Uapishka Station snowmobiling protocol, as an important component of the Uapishka Biodiversity Reserve management plan (with the support of the Société du Plan Nord)
  • Set up of a 900 MHz radio communication network in the area to connect the scientific partners’ weather stations, ensure the safety of people within the territory and centralize data communication (with the support of Public Safety Canada)
