Baie-Comeau, August 13, 2024 – The Students on Ice (SOI) Nunatsiavut-Nunavut 2024 expedition came to a close on August 6 for Manicouagan student Olivier Morin and all the other participants in the adventure. Barely back in Manicouagan, he stopped by the RMBMU offices to give us his first impressions… even though he’d hardly slept for almost two days!

“Gratitude! That’s the first word that comes to mind when I think of my adventure. I’m so grateful to have been able to live this experience. The SOI experience is first and foremost an adventure focused on awakening: awakening oneself, one’s curiosity and that of tomorrow’s citizens,” he asserted, his eyes shining.

Throughout his journey, which began in Ottawa and took him from Nain (Labrador) to Iqaluit via Torngat Mountains National Park and Baffin Island, Olivier documented his experience on video for his vlog Oli in the North. To ensure the quality of his images and the professionalism of his project, he received invaluable advice from Benoit Jobin, cameraman emeritus at Radio-Canada Côte-Nord, as well as from the videographers at Groupe North Shore.

His video capsules will be broadcast over the coming months, while our adventurer produces them.

Far from ending with his return to Baie-Comeau, the adventure will continue for Olivier in the coming months. He will then take on the role of ambassador, sharing his experience and the knowledge he has acquired through awareness-raising activities in the region.

This is the eighth partnership between the Manicouagan-Uapishka World Biosphere Reserve (MUWBR) and the Students on Ice Foundation. The costs of the two-week expedition were generously covered by the Fonds Aluminerie de Baie-Comeau pour les collectivités durables, the project’s main partner for many years, as well as the Caisses Desjardins des Ressources naturelles et de l’énergie and Populaire de Baie-Comeau.
